In a surprising upset, progressive politician Angie Nixon secured the Democratic nomination for a U.S. Senate seat in Florida, defying a more than 13-fold funding disadvantage. Nixon's campaign fundraised approximately $1.2 million, a stark contrast to the nearly $16 million amassed by her opponent, Alexander Vindman. The Associated Press and Decision Desk HQ declared Nixon the winner shortly after polls closed on Tuesday. Nixon defeated Vindman, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who was a key witness in the first impeachment proceedings against former President Donald Trump in 2019. This outcome suggests that strong backing from established Democratic Party figures and substantial financial resources are not always decisive in primary battles. "Organized people can beat big money. Angie Nixon just proved it," stated Andrea Pringle, President of March On PAC. Pringle emphasized that Nixon's success stemmed from her commitment to a progressive agenda, rather than compromising it to attract broader support. "Angie fought for working people, stood up to powerful interests, and refused to let pundits, consultants, or millions of dollars dictate what kind of candidate she should be," Pringle added. Nixon garnered support from several national progressive politicians, including U.S. Representatives Maxwell Frost, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib. Conversely, Vindman found stronger backing within the Democratic establishment and commanded a significantly larger campaign war chest. Following her victory, Nixon posted on X, "We did it, folks.
