Animal cruelty allegations surface after police dog dies in Chimbote

The death of 'Robin,' a Rottweiler belonging to the Chimbote municipal police's canine unit, has sparked widespread indignation. Neighbors, animal rights activists, and social media users are demanding answers after allegations surfaced that municipal agents allegedly mistreated the dog. These claims suggest the animal may have been subjected to retaliation after biting an agent. The incident reportedly occurred on May 18 near the Tres Estrellas market. Video footage circulating online appears to show several agents intervening with the dog shortly before its death, which animal welfare groups consider a clear case of animal cruelty. The digital outlet Poder Público reported that the video was allegedly filmed by another officer and that there were attempts to suppress its public release.

The Provincial Municipality of Santa has rejected the accusations, denying any cruelty by its employees. In a statement, the municipality asserted that there is no evidence to support the claims circulating on social media and that the accusations against officials and officers lack substance. According to the municipality's explanation, the incident involved a fight between two dogs from the canine unit on May 18, during which two agents were injured while attempting to separate them. The municipality stated that Robin died from injuries sustained in the fight and from friction with a restraint chain. An internal investigation has been launched by the Citizen Security Management to determine responsibilities and clarify the events.

However, the release of the video has fueled outrage among animal welfare organizations and citizens, who question the municipality's initial account of the dog's death. Activists argue that the video contradicts the official explanation that the dog died after being attacked by other animals. They insist on a transparent investigation to establish accountability within the police unit. These groups are demanding that the investigation proceed with full transparency and that any administrative or criminal responsibilities be determined. They also called for a review of the protocols for handling and ensuring the welfare of working dogs used by the municipality.
