Ankara Municipality Launches Pest Control Campaign

The Ankara Metropolitan Municipality (ABB) has launched an extensive pest control campaign across the capital to combat the increase in vectors and insects during the summer months. Teams from BelPlas, the municipality's pest control subsidiary, are working around the clock to ensure the comfort and health of residents.

We had over 4,000 pest control applications in June, and this number exceeded 6,000 in July, with the count increasing daily.

Recent comprehensive spraying operations have taken place in the Akyurt, Çubuk, and Pursaklar districts. The teams are systematically treating streets and avenues using environmentally friendly biocidal products. These approved products, certified by the World Health Organization and licensed by the Ministry of Health, are being applied to drainage grates, stagnant water pools, garbage collection areas, parks, and green spaces, locations conducive to the proliferation of mosquitoes, flies, and other pests.

Mümtaz Yavuz, head of the ABB Health Department, provided details on the ongoing efforts, emphasizing the priority placed on public health. "We had over 4,000 pest control applications in June, and this number exceeded 6,000 in July, with the count increasing daily," Yavuz stated. He attributed the rise in pest activity and control measures to the escalating temperatures, which foster the breeding of mosquitoes and flies.

The fundamental reason for this increase is that as the air temperatures rise, so do the mosquitoes and flies that are part of vector control.

The municipality is conducting these treatments during the early morning and late night hours to maximize effectiveness and minimize disruption. Special attention is being given to areas near dams and lakes, which are often hotspots for insect populations. The ultimate goal, Yavuz explained, is to ensure that citizens can enjoy outdoor spaces like parks and picnic areas without discomfort or health concerns.
