Ankara: Suspects Rearrested for Harassing Teenagers, Assaulting Elderly Intervener

Two suspects have been rearrested in Ankara's Mamak district following an incident where they allegedly verbally harassed two teenage girls and assaulted a 72-year-old man who attempted to intervene. The suspects, identified as T.S. (25) and an accomplice, had previously been detained but released.

The incident unfolded on July 27 when the suspects, driving a car, followed 14-year-old Y.P. and her 15-year-old cousin M.P. They then stopped and made inappropriate remarks. When the girls reacted, a verbal altercation ensued. Retired citizen Nurettin Erçayan intervened, attempting to shield the girls and confront the suspects.

According to Erçayan, he saw one of the individuals trying to force the girls into the car. He pulled one of the girls away, telling the suspects, "Aren't you ashamed? These are just 15-16-year-old children." As he tried to close the car door, he slipped and fell. The suspects then exited the vehicle and physically assaulted him, leaving him on the ground. The girls experienced significant fear during the attack.

Erçayan, who was treated at the hospital and released, stated, "I was just doing my duty as a human being. Anyone in my place would have done the same. Every child in this country is our child. Whether it's my own daughter or my neighbor's, I would have intervened."

Following their initial release, the suspects were rearrested. It was revealed that T.S. has a criminal record with nine entries, including charges for intentional injury and drug offenses. The investigation into the case is continuing.
