Announcer's 'saved up for apartment' video deleted amid controversy

A YouTube video by South Korean announcer Jo Soo-bin, titled 'A New Apartment in Banpo Bought with Pennies Saved,' has been deleted following a public outcry over the source of funds for the luxury property. The video featured a junior announcer's apartment in the Maple자이 complex in Jamwon-dong, Seoul, where units have recently sold for between 5 to 6 billion won (approximately $3.6 to $4.3 million USD).

Jo questioned her colleague on how she managed to afford a new apartment in the affluent Banpo district on an announcer's salary. The junior announcer's response was simply "savings," and she denied engaging in stock or cryptocurrency investments. This explanation quickly drew skepticism online, with many questioning the realism of accumulating such a vast sum through savings alone, considering the costs associated with purchasing an apartment, including down payments, taxes, and fees.

As the controversy intensified, Jo Soo-bin offered a more detailed explanation. She stated that the purchase was made by a dual-income couple who had invested in stocks over a long period and minimized living expenses. She also mentioned parental assistance, though she stressed it was not excessive by societal standards. Furthermore, Jo noted that the purchase occurred before the recent surge in housing prices and under different regulatory conditions, emphasizing the couple's long-term frugality.

Despite these clarifications, the public remained critical of the financial origins of the apartment. The video's title was initially changed to 'Visiting My Beloved Junior's New Home Decorated with Carrots and Refurbished Items,' and the production team issued an apology for causing misunderstanding through the thumbnail and editing. However, the persistent criticism led to the ultimate deletion of the video from Jo Soo-bin's YouTube channel.
