Another Worker Injured in SPC Bread Factory Entrapment Accident

A migrant worker sustained severe injuries after becoming trapped in machinery at the Shani bakery in Daegu, a facility owned by SPC Group. The incident occurred on August 10th when the 41-year-old worker's right arm was caught in an automatic panning machine used for aligning dough. The injury was so severe that bones and tendons were exposed. This latest accident adds to a disturbing pattern of similar incidents at SPC Group affiliates. In 2022, a worker died in an entrapment accident at SPL's Pyeongtaek plant, followed by another fatality at Shani's Seongnam plant in 2023, and a third at Samlip's Sihwa plant in 2025. Just last month, two workers at Samlip's Sihwa plant lost fingers in separate accidents, prompting the company to promise preventative measures. The Korean Chemical, Fiber, Food Industrial Union has strongly condemned SPC Group's "barbaric practices," emphasizing that the injured worker was a migrant. The union urged the company not to evade responsibility by citing language barriers or worker carelessness. They are demanding special negotiations with SPC Group, calling for a joint labor-management investigation to identify structural causes, provision of treatment and compensation for the injured worker, trauma support for employees, and the implementation of effective preventative measures. These include multilingual safety training, two-person work systems, and protective gear for dangerous machinery. Police and the Ministry of Employment and Labor are currently investigating the exact cause of the accident and potential violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
