Antioquia sends specialized firefighting teams to aid Tolima's wildfire emergency

Antioquia has dispatched specialized tactical contingents to aid Tolima in battling severe forest fires that are ravaging the region. The Departmental System for Disaster Risk Management in Antioquia activated its resources to provide direct support to Tolima's authorities.

Around 30 firefighters, experts in handling such emergencies, have been mobilized to bolster containment and extinguishment efforts. These specialized units have been strategically divided into two operational groups to maximize their effectiveness in the most critical areas. Teams from the eastern subregion are focused on El Espinal, while personnel from Bajo Cauca and Urabá are deployed in Venadillo.

The deployed units include experienced firefighters from municipalities such as Necoclí, San Pedro de Urabá, Segovia, and Remedios, alongside members of the Eastern Forest Brigade. To support their operations, the delegation is equipped with seven rescue vehicles and advanced technology specifically designed for vegetation fires. The intervention, which began on August 22, is planned to continue until August 30, ensuring sustained assistance.

Andrés Julián Rendón, the governor of Antioquia, reaffirmed the department's commitment to solidarity, stating its readiness to collaborate with Tolima's governor and community to protect lives and natural resources. This deployment comes after Antioquia itself faced significant challenges with forest fires throughout August, having responded to 73 vegetation fires this year, 18 of which occurred in August alone. Major fires in Medellín and Abejorral required over three days of firefighting efforts.
