Antisemitic Incidents Rise in Rome, Challenging City's Image of Harmony

Rome, a city known for its ancient Jewish community and culinary traditions that symbolize integration, is facing a troubling rise in antisemitic incidents. The "carciofi alla giudia" (Jewish-style fried artichokes) and other dishes from the local Jewish-Roman cuisine have long represented a narrative of harmonious coexistence between Jewish and Roman cultures, dating back to antiquity.

However, this image has been recently tarnished by a series of antisemitic attacks. Reports of assaults, open threats, insults, and vandalism against Jews have made headlines. According to the Milan-based Contemporary Jewish Documentation Center (CDEC), antisemitic incidents across Italy have surged, with 963 recorded in 2025, up from 877 in 2024. The Lazio region, which includes Rome, has seen a particularly high number of physical assaults.

Recent events include the assault of a 62-year-old man wearing a kippah and the exclusion of a Jewish LGBTQ+ network from the Roma Pride parade, reportedly for refusing to distance themselves from the Israeli offensive in Gaza. These incidents highlight growing tensions and a more hostile environment for the Jewish community.

A particularly confusing incident involved a 21-year-old member of the Jewish community who fired a compressed air pistol at a couple wearing partisan association scarves during a rally. This act by a Jewish individual targeting those associated with the fight against Nazism complicates the traditional narrative and adds another layer of complexity to the rising antisemitism in Rome.
