Antofagasta: Minor dies in massive camp fire

A devastating fire swept through the "Un Techo para Latinoamérica" camp in Antofagasta, Chile, late Friday night, resulting in the loss of 13 homes and displacing 50 residents. The blaze, which ignited in the camp located at Santa Rosa de Huara and Juvenal Morla streets in the northern sector of the city, tragically claimed the life of one minor.

Firefighting efforts were severely hampered by the camp's challenging terrain, which made access for fire trucks difficult. Compounding the problem was a lack of fire hydrants in the vicinity, forcing the deployment of water supply units. Over 100 firefighters battled the extreme complexity of the emergency.

Alfonso Olivera, the first commander of the Fire Department, reported that nine houses were completely destroyed by the fire, while four others sustained partial damage from both the flames and the water used to combat them. In total, 30 adults and 19 children were left without shelter. Carabineros de Orden Público assisted the firefighters in their operations.
