Antonelli wins Belgian GP, extends championship lead after Russell-Hamilton clash

Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes secured victory at the F1 Belgian Grand Prix, significantly widening his lead in the championship standings. The 19-year-old Italian driver battled Max Verstappen for the lead early on, ultimately reclaiming the top spot after Verstappen briefly took it.

The race was dramatically impacted on the opening lap when Antonelli's teammate George Russell collided with Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari. The incident forced Russell to retire from the race and resulted in Hamilton receiving a five-second time penalty.

A virtual safety car was deployed following the first-lap incident. Later, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari briefly took the lead after an opportune pit stop during a second VSC period. However, Antonelli, on fresher tires, overtook Leclerc with ten laps remaining to clinch his sixth win of the season.

Antonelli finished 1.9 seconds ahead of Leclerc, with Verstappen a further 11.5 seconds behind in third. Hamilton finished fourth. With this victory, Antonelli has ended a three-race winless streak and now leads the championship with 204 points. Hamilton is second, 45 points behind, and Russell is third, 50 points adrift.

Mercedes leads the constructors' championship with 358 points, ahead of Ferrari's 285. The F1 season continues next week in Hungary, with 12 races left on the calendar.
