Antonelli Wins Belgian Grand Prix, Extends Season Lead

Italian driver Kimi Antonelli has secured his sixth career victory in Formula 1, winning the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. The young Mercedes driver, who will turn 20 later in August, took the lead from Charles Leclerc with 11 laps left in the race, solidifying his dominance throughout the weekend.

Antonelli's win marks his sixth of the season, attributed in part to Mercedes developing the best car under the new regulations for 2026. The race saw early drama when teammates George Russell and Lewis Hamilton collided in the first lap. While Hamilton received a five-second penalty and fell out of podium contention, Russell was forced to retire.

After a safety car period, Max Verstappen briefly led before Antonelli began to increase his advantage. Virtual safety cars later shuffled the order, placing Leclerc in the lead temporarily. Antonelli, however, managed to regain his rhythm and overtake Leclerc for the decisive win.

"It's nice to be back on top after a few difficult race weekends," Antonelli stated. "It was a real fight. We lost first place after the virtual safety car, then came back to the lead. It was tough, Charles was really fast. I had some luck today regarding the overall standings, but that's why we always say we have to seize every opportunity. Everything can turn around quickly, as we've seen countless times."

With this victory, Antonelli significantly extended his lead in the season standings to 204 points. Lewis Hamilton's fourth-place finish moved him to second with 159 points, while Russell remains at 154. The next race on the calendar is the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring in a week.
