About Delo
Delo was founded in 1959 through the merger of two newspapers of the Communist Party of Slovenia. Post-independence, it transitioned to commercial independence. It is currently owned by FMR d.d., a financial management company, which acquired Delo in 2015. Businessman Stojan Petrič owns FMR.
Delo is rated as Left-Center biased by Media Bias/Fact Check, based on editorial positions that slightly favor the left, often using loaded words to support liberal causes. It covers a variety of perspectives, but more stories lean left, supporting racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and climate change. While generally trustworthy, Media Bias/Fact Check rates it 'Mostly Factual' rather than 'High' due to a lack of hyperlinked sourcing. Historically, its origins in state-controlled media contributed to a persistent left-leaning editorial stance. The outlet has faced controversies, including a journalist reportedly fired after criticizing the government and another prosecuted for publishing classified information. Press freedom in Slovenia is constitutionally protected, but outlets can face pressure or threats for reporting on political controversies.
