Anwar vows wider graft crackdown, cites king’s backing

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has pledged a significant escalation in the fight against corruption, promising "fierce" enforcement actions and revealing he has the backing of the nation's king. Speaking at the party congress of his Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) on Saturday, Anwar positioned the intensified anti-graft campaign as a core component of his renewed "reformasi" agenda.

Anwar, who also serves as PKR president, stated that political stability and improved economic performance have created an opportune moment for his government to concentrate on institutional reforms. "My instructions are clear: anyone who violates the rules, steals assets, or betrays the trust of the people... must face action," he declared. He added that the king had urged ministers to pursue corruption issues beyond just the Tabung Haji fund.

The Tabung Haji is Malaysia's Muslim pilgrimage savings fund. A royal commission of inquiry into the fund's issues between 2014 and 2020 revealed significant governance weaknesses, including broad ministerial powers, politically influenced appointments, and questionable accounting practices. A report detailing these findings was submitted to the king in August 2022 and publicly released recently.

This commitment to tackling corruption comes at a critical juncture for Anwar's party and the broader Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, which he also leads. The PKR congress is being closely watched following recent electoral defeats, where the party and coalition suffered significant losses in state elections. Analysts attribute these setbacks partly to the rise of a Malay-Muslim alliance between Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional.
