Anxiety as Leaders of Turaki-led PDP Faction Meet Jonathan in Abuja

Anxiety has surfaced within Nigeria's political landscape as leaders of a faction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), headed by Taminu Turaki, met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja. This meeting precedes the 2027 general election, for which Jonathan was announced as the faction's presidential candidate in absentia.

Jonathan, however, has not publicly confirmed his acceptance of this nomination or declared any intention to run for the presidency in 2027. His nomination papers were received on his behalf by a member of the House of Representatives from Bayelsa State, Job Fred Agbaje. The specifics of Jonathan's discussions with the Turaki-led Interim National Working Committee remain undisclosed, but the meeting is widely seen as part of the strategic maneuvering for the upcoming election.

Turaki, addressing a stakeholders' meeting, conveyed optimism about the PDP's ability to navigate its current internal strife. He drew parallels to past leadership crises, including the establishment of the Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee, suggesting that the present challenges are less severe. "The kind of challenge that the Peoples Democratic Party is facing today is not new to us," Turaki stated, asserting that the party has weathered more significant storms in the past.

He also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating the crises plaguing opposition parties. This accusation comes in the wake of a Federal High Court ruling on July 17 that dismissed a suit seeking official recognition for the Turaki-led interim National Working Committee. The PDP is currently divided, with the faction supported by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, being the one recognized by the courts and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
