APC committed to expanding opportunities for women – Secretary

Senator Surajudeen Basiru, the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called upon Nigerian women residing in the diaspora to rally support for the continuity of President Bola Tinubu's reforms and the ruling party as the 2027 general elections approach. Basiru highlighted the APC's dedication to broadening opportunities for women, both within the party's structures and in public governance, positioning gender inclusion as a fundamental aspect of its political ideology.

The APC acknowledges that diaspora women are not mere supporters of government programmes but strategic partners in the realisation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Speaking at the APC Diaspora/Global Women Summit 2026 in Rome, Italy, Basiru delivered a keynote address emphasizing the strategic importance of diaspora women. He described them as key assets to Nigeria, excelling in various professional fields such as academia, medicine, law, engineering, entrepreneurship, diplomacy, finance, and technology. Basiru also acknowledged their significant contributions to Nigeria's economy through investments, remittances, philanthropy, skills transfer, and advocacy, underscoring their potential when provided with opportunities.

Basiru stressed that diaspora women are not merely passive supporters but active partners in realizing the "Renewed Hope Agenda." He referred to them as ambassadors of Nigeria, promoting democratic values and serving as a vital link between Nigeria and the international community. Their international connections, technical expertise, financial resources, and policy insights, he noted, can significantly contribute to national development.

As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 elections, Basiru urged the women to actively engage in civic duties, combat misinformation and disinformation, champion democratic governance, mentor younger women, and expand the party's global reach. He reiterated the APC's commitment to increasing women's participation in political leadership, policy formulation, party administration, and electoral mobilization, believing that inclusive leadership leads to better governance outcomes. The party also aims to strengthen collaboration with its diaspora chapters by creating more structured platforms for engagement, knowledge sharing, policy dialogue, investment promotion, and leadership development.
