APC petitions police to arrest, prosecute governorship aspirant over Ogun ticket claim

Nigeria's All Progressives Congress (APC) has formally requested the Inspector General of Police to investigate, arrest, and prosecute governorship aspirant Abayomi Hunye. The party accuses Hunye of unlawfully parading himself as the APC's candidate for the Ogun State governorship election, scheduled for January 2027.

The petition, submitted on August 24, marks a significant escalation in the dispute over the APC's nomination process in Ogun State. The party has publicly disowned Hunye and reaffirmed Senator Solomon Olamilekan, widely known as Yayi, as its official candidate. Kudirat Balogun has been identified as Mr. Olamilekan’s running mate.

Signed by Ayoola Olajolo, Director of Administration at the APC National Headquarters, the petition details accusations of false representation, impersonation, and conduct likely to breach public peace. The APC asserts that Hunye's actions violate provisions of the Electoral Act 2026. "The subject has notoriously and unlawfully taken to the public domain, including print and social media, parading himself as the Governorship Candidate of our Party for the forthcoming January 2027 election," the petition states, calling the claim "false, fraudulent, and a deliberate act of impersonation."

The APC's stance is further strengthened by Hunye's alleged suspension from the party on April 7, following a petition from his ward. According to the party, this suspension was ratified at local and state levels before being communicated to the national headquarters. Documents, including a suspension letter and ratification notices, were attached to the petition, citing Hunye's involvement in anti-party activities and actions detrimental to the APC's image and unity.
