Apple CEO Hints at Future Fees for Heavy Users of iPhone AI Features

Apple CEO Tim Cook has signaled a potential shift in how users access the company's burgeoning artificial intelligence capabilities. While Apple Intelligence, the suite of AI features integrated into iPhones, iPads, and Macs, is currently available for free to users with compatible hardware, Cook indicated during the company's fiscal third-quarter earnings call that "heavy users" might face subscription fees in the future.

Cook mentioned plans to offer "some kind of upgrade option" through iCloud+ for users who intend to "massively use" Apple Intelligence and the upcoming Siri AI. Although specific details remain undisclosed, the mention of Siri AI suggests it could be a key component of this tiered access model. This move aligns with Apple's strategy of leveraging its subscription services to generate recurring revenue.

Evidence of this tiered approach is already emerging. Apple has previously stated that new AI-powered image generation features, such as the "Clean Up" and "Extend" tools in the Photos app and the revamped Image Playground in iOS 17, will have daily usage limits. iCloud+ subscribers will benefit from higher usage caps for these features. Furthermore, certain AI functionalities are already being bundled with iCloud+ plans. For instance, an AI video recording feature within the Home app requires a 2TB iCloud+ subscription, and the new Cloud Pro model in the Shortcuts app is exclusively available to users on higher-tier iCloud+ plans.
