Apprenticeship year: Careers in skilled trades increasingly in demand

The skilled trades sector is experiencing a surge in interest among young people in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland regions, according to Axel Bettendorf, managing director of the Association of Chambers of Skilled Crafts. He noted that the appeal of vocational training as an educational and career path is visibly growing, with over 130 different apprenticeship professions available, ranging from mechanical engineers for plant systems to hairdressers and dental technicians. While this growing interest is positive, Bettendorf stated it is not yet sufficient to fully meet the demand from businesses. The four Chambers of Skilled Crafts in the region saw 5,682 new apprenticeship contracts registered last year, a number already surpassed this year with 6,029 contracts by August, and more are expected to be finalized in the coming months. Ulrike Mohrs, the new head of the Regional Directorate Rhineland-Palatinate/Saarland of the Federal Employment Agency, believes the skilled trades are benefiting from the current economic climate, particularly concerning training. She observes a rising interest because "if you need a tradesperson, it's difficult to get one." She highlighted that there is demand and work available, making it crucial to attract skilled workers. Many companies are also looking to secure young talent to ensure future succession within their businesses. Bettendorf emphasized that successful completion of a trade apprenticeship offers good and secure employment prospects, early financial independence, and flexible career paths. Mohrs added that the trades often provide excellent opportunities to build a financially secure career, sometimes surpassing those of university graduates. Mohrs also pointed out that people are increasingly recognizing the opportunities in skilled trades, partly because many jobs are resistant to automation, unlike some roles in industry. Bettendorf confirmed that many craft activities cannot be replaced by artificial intelligence. Young people seeking practical work with visible results find fulfillment in the trades, which also engage with future-oriented topics such as energy supply, mobility, housing, climate protection, and quality of life, incorporating modern technologies like digital control systems, robotics, and smart building technology.
