Approaching Typhoon Hongxia: Rain expected in eastern Taiwan and Hengchun Peninsula, temperatures to soar

Taiwan is bracing for the potential arrival of Typhoon Hongxia, currently a tropical depression, which is forecast to approach the island by Friday. Weather authorities predict that areas in eastern Taiwan, including Hualien and Taitung, along with the Hengchun Peninsula in the south, could see localized showers and thunderstorms. The rainfall is expected to become more pronounced as Friday progresses.

Friday, affected by a tropical depression or the outer circulation of a typhoon, the windward eastern Taiwan and Hengchun Peninsula will have local short-term showers or thunderstorms, and the rain will become more obvious as the night progresses.

In addition to the precipitation, Taiwan is expected to experience high temperatures, with daytime highs ranging from 32 to 36 degrees Celsius. Some inland areas and valleys, particularly in the north and central regions, could even reach above 36 degrees Celsius due to southeastern wind effects. The weather bureau has warned of strong ultraviolet radiation, advising the public to stay hydrated and use sun protection when outdoors.

The tropical depression, designated TD13, was located about 920 kilometers southeast of Eluanbi on Thursday afternoon and is moving northwest by west. It has a trend of developing into a light typhoon by Thursday night or early Friday morning. The storm's projected path suggests it will move towards the Bashi Channel and enter the South China Sea, potentially increasing rainfall in southern Taiwan as the typhoon moves southwest of the island.

Daytime high temperatures will generally reach 32 to 36 degrees Celsius. Affected by the downdraft of the southeast wind, some areas in northern Taiwan may experience Föhn winds, and local areas in northern Taiwan, inland central and southern Taiwan, and the East Rift Valley may reach 36 degrees Celsius or higher.

Meanwhile, air quality is expected to be moderate in most western areas due to less favorable dispersion conditions, while eastern Taiwan and Yilan will have good air quality. Northern and northeastern Taiwan are expected to have limited rainfall impact, maintaining hot and humid weather with potential afternoon thunderstorms.
