Argentina chooses Kansas City as base for 2026 World Cup

The Argentinian national football team has chosen Kansas City, Missouri, as its base for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aiming to reduce long-distance travel during the tournament. The decision, confirmed by the Argentine Football Association (AFA) in February, aligns with FIFA's strategy to minimize extensive journeys for participating teams.

Lionel Scaloni's coaching staff and AFA officials selected the Compass Minerals National Performance Center as the training ground for 'La Albiceleste.' This state-of-the-art facility combines advanced technology, top-tier infrastructure, and comprehensive medical services. Designed to accommodate professional clubs and national teams globally, it has become a significant center for football development in the United States.

Opened in 2017, the 21-hectare sports complex serves as a training ground for Major League Soccer (MLS) club Sporting Kansas City. It features five cutting-edge pitches, including three regulation-size natural grass fields and two synthetic turf fields with LED lighting. These are complemented by a two-story training pavilion equipped with classrooms, camera stations, and an observation platform.

The center also houses the United States Soccer Federation's National Coaching Development Center and the Children's Mercy Kansas City Sports Medicine Center, reinforcing Kansas City's role as a strategic hub for football and sports medicine. The facility's website describes it as "the crown jewel of American soccer," built to develop elite players, coaches, and referees. It has previously hosted training sessions for top-tier teams like the Portland Thorns women's soccer club and the Canadian women's rugby team.
