Argentina issues red, orange, yellow alerts for extreme cold, rain, snow, and wind

Argentina faces severe weather conditions as the National Meteorological Service (SMN) issued red, orange, and yellow alerts for extreme cold, heavy rain, snow, and strong winds across six provinces for Thursday, July 30. The highest alert, red, is in effect for western Santa Cruz, where temperatures could plunge to -5°C, posing "very dangerous" health risks. Orange alerts for extreme cold are active in northeastern Santa Cruz, with moderate to high health risks, especially for vulnerable groups.

Yellow alerts for extreme cold cover southeastern Santa Cruz, Tierra del Fuego, and southeastern Chubut, warning of mild to moderate health effects. The SMN recommends avoiding prolonged outdoor exposure, layering clothing, and maintaining safe heating. It also stresses the importance of hydration and extra care for children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.

In addition to the cold, an orange alert for heavy rainfall is in place for southwestern Neuquén, anticipating 30 to 60 millimeters of precipitation, potentially mixed with snow at higher elevations. Yellow alerts for rain extend to parts of Chubut, Río Negro, Neuquén, and eastern Santa Cruz, with expected accumulations of 20 to 30 millimeters. Residents are advised to follow local authority guidance, avoid unnecessary travel, clear drains, and stay away from flood-prone areas. Driving with caution and preparing emergency kits are also recommended.
