Argentina nears agreement on updated seed law after months of talks

After months of intensive negotiations, the Argentine government, the seed industry, and agricultural organizations are reportedly closer to reaching an agreement on reforming the nation's seed law. Representatives from these key sectors shared optimistic views during a panel at the Aapresid Congress, indicating that consensus is within reach. Phrases like "We are getting closer" and "I believe we will end up agreeing" were used to describe the progress. While acknowledging that some differences still need to be resolved, the dialogue has significantly advanced since initial discussions were marked by distrust. Martín Famulari, president of the National Seed Institute (Inase), noted the shift from adversarial interactions to a more collaborative approach, highlighting that the agricultural sector now understands the need to pay for self-use. Alfredo Paseyro, executive director of the Argentine Seed Association (ASA), agreed that the current 1973 seed law is outdated and hinders agricultural evolution. He stressed the importance of establishing modern rules that provide predictability for investments in genetic improvement, aiming to restore Argentina's pioneering role in the sector. Pablo Ginestet, president of Carbap, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the goal of building a predictable system for both seed producers and users.
