Argentina raises pressure as Falklands dispute draws renewed attention

Javier Milei has raised the stakes in Argentina’s dispute with Britain over the Falkland Islands, warning that an offshore oil project could soon give its operators the physical ability to extract oil beneath waters Argentina claims.

He warned that the project could encourage Britain to deepen its occupation and continue exploiting Argentina’s resources.

The president also announced additional resources to build a naval base in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina’s southernmost territory. He said the base would strengthen the country’s geopolitical influence and turn the area into a key logistics hub.

The remarks follow comments by U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting that Washington could review its long-standing policy of strategic ambiguity over the territory’s sovereignty. Trump recently avoided answering whether the United States would support Britain in another Falklands conflict, casting further uncertainty over Washington’s position.
