Argentina's Agricultural Input Market Sees Strong Demand Amid Favorable Conditions

Argentina's agricultural sector is experiencing a more positive outlook for the upcoming coarse grain season, driven by favorable moisture conditions that are benefiting current wheat and barley crops. Companies in the agricultural inputs market report that demand has already surpassed last year's levels and anticipate this trend will persist in the coming months.

While the increased water availability promises better yields, it also raises concerns about a potential rise in weeds, diseases, and pests. However, producers are demonstrating a growing willingness to invest in technology, provided it delivers tangible results in the field. This cautious adoption of innovation is a key trend observed by agricultural input providers.

Juan Pablo Migasso, Senior Manager of Crop Systems at BASF, noted the market improvement compared to the previous year. He explained that the demand surge began with herbicides for pre-sowing wheat and barley and has now shifted to fungicides for the already planted crops. "The crop is doing well, it was sown well, it was planted well, the development will be good, and we will surely have diseases," Migasso stated, highlighting the proactive approach to managing potential issues.

Regarding purchasing behavior, Migasso observed that producers are delaying their acquisitions until closer to the application period, a shift from previous years when supply chain issues and price volatility prompted earlier purchases. "When I need the product, I buy it today," he summarized. Financing also plays a crucial role, with farmers actively seeking "good financial tools, financing options, payment at harvest" and flexible terms that align with their production cycles.

Migasso emphasized that producers are prepared to invest in higher-value products when they can clearly see a difference in field performance. This decision-making process considers not only the product itself but also its formulation, application method, and associated services. The positive climate conditions, influenced by El Niño, are expected to ensure good water availability and higher yields, though the accompanying humidity may also foster the development of weeds and diseases. BASF views this as a positive year, also noting the increasing adoption of digital tools and artificial intelligence among producers, such as drone-based weed mapping.
