Argentina’s Gustavo Lema named new coach of Mexico’s Juárez FC

Gustavo Lema will take charge of Juárez FC after the Mexican club dismissed Pedro Caixinha during a disastrous start to the Apertura 2026 tournament.

The 57-year-old Argentine arrives with Juárez at the bottom of the standings after six matches, without a point. The team has scored only three goals and conceded 19, leaving it with both the league’s weakest attack and most heavily beaten defense.

Salvador Valero had served as interim coach in recent matches. Juárez said Lema would lead the men’s first team alongside his own staff and the club’s institutional coaching team.

Fútbol Club Juárez informs that Argentine coach Gustavo Lema is taking charge of the men’s first team, where he will be accompanied by his staff as well as the institutional coaching team.

Lema began working as a head coach at Pumas UNAM, directing the club in the 2024 Clausura, the 2024 Apertura and the 2025 Clausura. He also coached Chile’s Audax Italiano last year before leaving in June.

Although his time as a head coach has been relatively short, Lema has extensive experience as an assistant. He worked with Colón, Independiente and Huracán in Argentina, as well as Veracruz, Tijuana, América, Monterrey and Pumas in Mexico. He also worked at Celta de Vigo in Spain and Atlético Mineiro in Brazil. Juárez’s first match under its new coach will be at home against Pachuca in the seventh round.
