Argentina's Milei to attend Peru president-elect's inauguration

Argentine President Javier Milei is scheduled to travel to Lima on Tuesday to attend the inauguration of Peru's President-elect Keiko Fujimori. Fujimori, the daughter and political heir of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, was officially proclaimed the winner of a closely contested election on July 3.

Sources within the Argentine government confirmed Milei's attendance at the ceremony, which will commence Fujimori's five-year mandate. Peruvian Foreign Minister Carlos Pareja had previously indicated that leaders from several other nations, including King Felipe VI of Spain, and the presidents of Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, and Uruguay, would also be present.

Additionally, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of Spain's People's Party (PP), and several right-wing former Latin American presidents, such as Jamil Mahuad of Ecuador, Jeanine Áñez of Bolivia, and Mireya Moscoso of Panama, are expected to attend the event.

Keiko Fujimori secured the presidency by a narrow margin of less than 50,000 votes over her leftist opponent, Roberto Sánchez. This victory marks the return of Fujimorismo to the government of Peru, nearly twenty-six years after her father, Alberto Fujimori, resigned amidst a massive corruption scandal and later faced imprisonment and conviction for crimes against humanity.
