Argentina's Mining Secretary: 'Imperdonable' Not to Seize Mineral Opportunity

Luis Lucero, Argentina's Secretary of Mining, views the country's mineral wealth as a critical opportunity for economic growth and development. He emphasizes that copper and lithium can become major drivers of the Argentine economy, particularly for the western regions along the Andes mountains where other economic activities are scarce.

Lucero pointed to the global demand for minerals essential for electrification, noting that Argentina possesses abundant copper and other critical minerals. He cited a Standard & Poor's estimate predicting a global copper deficit of nearly 10 million tons annually by 2040, underscoring the clear economic advantage for Argentina to meet this demand.

He also highlighted recent legislative successes, such as the modification of the Glaciers Law, which he described as a significant hurdle removed. Lucero expressed his belief that it would be "imperdonable" for Argentina not to capitalize on these opportunities, stressing the need to attract investments and accelerate project development to boost exports over the next decade.
