Argentina's 'Snowstorm of the Decade' Strands 1,500 Trucks, Disrupts Winter Holidays

Mendoza, Argentina, is grappling with a "snowstorm of the decade" that has paralyzed the crucial Route 7, the primary artery connecting Argentina and Chile. Over 1,500 trucks are stranded, primarily in the eastern part of the province and in the mountain town of Uspallata, awaiting clearance to proceed.

The international Cristo Redentor pass is completely cut off, and the harsh weather is expected to persist until mid-August. Experts warn that El Niño could trigger similar extreme events through the spring. While authorities work to clear the snow and reopen the road in sections, drivers endure lengthy waits.

"It's not easy to spend several days in the mountains, but we have to be grateful for the assistance we receive, both in terms of goods and health services," said Carlos, a Chilean transporter stranded for a week in Uspallata. "However, more infrastructure and services are needed to make it more comfortable. We spend almost all our time inside the truck."

Ski resorts like Penitentes and Los Puquios are also on standby, with reduced staff preparing slopes and facilities. Access to the mountain town of Punta de Vacas, about 15 kilometers from the ski centers, is permitted only with mandatory chains. Despite the disruptions, thousands of tourists have managed to experience the snow in recent days.
