Argentina updates criteria for selecting primary school textbooks

Argentina's government has introduced changes to the selection criteria for primary school textbooks, specifically for Language and Mathematics subjects. These updated guidelines will govern the books distributed nationwide through the "Libros para Aprender" (Books to Learn) program.

The measure, formalized through Resolution 476/2026, establishes a unified procedure for evaluating texts submitted by publishing houses. It outlines the pedagogical and technical prerequisites that materials must meet to be considered for acquisition and distribution by the provinces. Books must have been published or updated since January 2024, possess an ISBN, be written in Spanish, align with the National Literacy Plan, and include the bicontinental map.

A National Advisory Commission, composed of specialists appointed by the 24 jurisdictions, will assess each submitted book. The commission will issue a recommendation, "recommended," "not recommended," or "disqualified." Subsequently, each province will select the titles to be made available to its schools, and individual schools will then choose the specific books for their students.

Evaluation criteria emphasize alignment with Priority Learning Cores, up-to-date information, absence of conceptual or grammatical errors, and "political and ideological neutrality." Materials should also feature clear language, appropriate graphics, and content that fosters critical thinking, reading comprehension, and problem-solving skills. For Language, the focus is on strengthening reading and writing practices and phonological awareness. Mathematics books will be valued for their problem-solving approaches, mathematical communication, and learning strategies. The selection process aims for a "plurality of approaches," with the final list of selected books valid for 30 months.
