Argentina will meet IMF targets “without problems,” Economy Minister Caputo says

Luis Caputo says Argentina will meet its targets under the International Monetary Fund program “without problems,” and may comfortably exceed the fiscal goal if asset sales are included.

We will be meeting the IMF targets without problems. If you include asset sales, we will actually be comfortably exceeding them. But even without taking asset sales into account, we will meet the fiscal target as well.

Speaking to La Nación during the G20 summit in Asheville, the economy minister said he had received no questions from IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, Deputy Managing Director Dan Katz or World Bank President Ajay Banga about Argentina’s inflation, deficit or rising credit delinquency. “They really have no concerns. In the United States, the Treasury and the Fund are much more optimistic,” Caputo said.

Caputo also met U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Asheville. He said they discussed Argentina’s situation and the international geopolitical environment, including the impact of the conflict in the Middle East.

The next review of Argentina’s IMF program is scheduled for January 31, 2027, and will assess performance criteria through the end of December 2026. Caputo’s comments came a month after Georgieva visited Argentina and praised the country’s “macroeconomic progress and financial stability.” She said additional financing beyond the existing program was not expected to be necessary.

Argentina owes the IMF about $58.115 billion, making it the fund’s largest debtor. The debt represents 34.6% of the IMF’s outstanding credit.
