Argentine League Standings: Race for 2027 Copa Berths Heats Up

The 2026 Argentine Primera División annual standings are crucial, defining not only one relegation spot to the Primera Nacional but also nine qualification berths for the 2027 Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana seasons.

Belgrano de Córdoba has already secured a place in next year's top continental competition as the champion of the Torneo Apertura 2026. The winners of the Clausura tournament and the Copa Argentina will claim the other two direct Libertadores spots. An additional three Libertadores berths will be awarded to the top three teams based on the combined points accumulated in the Apertura and Clausura tournaments. Currently, Independiente Rivadavia and Argentinos Juniors lead this ranking with 38 points, followed by Estudiantes de La Plata with 34 points, who hold a superior goal difference over Vélez.

The six clubs immediately following in the annual standings would qualify for the 2027 Copa Sudamericana. These include Vélez, Rosario Central, and Gimnasia de La Plata (all with 32 points), followed by Boca (31 points), and Independiente and Barracas Central (both with 30 points). Notably, River Plate is currently outside the international qualification zone with 29 points.

Clubs qualifying for international tournaments as cup winners might free up their annual standings spot if they also finish within the qualification positions for CONMEBOL events. This scenario could apply to Belgrano, currently eleventh. Similar situations could arise if Independiente Rivadavia, Estudiantes de La Plata, Platense, or Rosario Central win the 2026 Copa Libertadores and finish in the top three domestically. Boca, Tigre, or River could also free up spots if they win the 2026 Copa Sudamericana and qualify for the next Libertadores by finishing first, second, or third in the Argentine league.
