Argentine President Milei to meet with Flávio Bolsonaro in Brazil

Argentine President Javier Milei is set to visit Brazil for a high-profile meeting with Flávio Bolsonaro, a leading contender for the presidency, and to attend the Liberal Party's national convention. The trip, scheduled for Friday evening, will see Milei participate in the Saturday convention where Flávio Bolsonaro is expected to be formally nominated as the party's candidate for the upcoming October elections.

This meeting highlights the strong ideological alignment between Milei and the Bolsonaro family, who have positioned themselves as key figures of a new right-wing movement across Latin America since 2023. Their political bond was notably solidified in July 2024 during Milei's first presidential visit to Brazil, where he attended a conservative forum in Balneário Camboriú.

During that previous visit, Milei notably avoided any engagement with Brazil's current president, Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva, and skipped the Mercosur summit in Paraguay to share a platform with Jair Bolsonaro, Flávio's father. The relationship between Milei and Lula has been notably tense. In a contrasting move in July 2025, Lula visited former Argentine President Cristina Kirchner, who faces corruption charges and is under house arrest, following a Mercosur summit in Buenos Aires.

While Milei had initially planned to visit Jair Bolsonaro at his residence, where the former president is under house arrest for alleged coup attempts, Brazil's Supreme Court denied the authorization for this specific meeting.
