Argentine Senator Zamora linked to AFA corruption probe

Senator Gerardo Zamora, a dominant political figure in Argentina's Santiago del Estero province, is reportedly concerned as judicial and journalistic investigations into financial misconduct at the Argentine Football Association (AFA) intensify. Zamora is accused of being the political and financial architect behind AFA treasurer Pablo Toviggino, who is central to the probes.

Toviggino, who grew up in Santiago del Estero and became a prominent businessman and football executive with Zamora's backing, allegedly used his position to benefit his home province. Official documents reportedly show that Santiago del Estero, a province with significant structural poverty, provided millions in state subsidies to Toviggino's football club, Central Córdoba. These funds were allegedly provided even before Toviggino assumed control of the AFA's finances.

Furthermore, Zamora's administration is said to have awarded lucrative contracts to Toviggino's companies for years, including security services for public buildings and hospitals through Toviggino's firm BORI SA. This occurred while the province simultaneously supported Toviggino's football club. The AFA also backed the construction of the Estadio Único Madres de Ciudades in the provincial capital, a modern stadium contrasting sharply with surrounding impoverished neighborhoods.

Zamora, known for his discreet yet firm control over his province, is reportedly uneasy about the increasing scrutiny. The investigations are now examining these business dealings, which have been conducted with a degree of opacity. The confluence of state funding, business contracts, and elite football infrastructure in Santiago del Estero has placed both Zamora and Toviggino under a harsh spotlight.
