Armed Forces Complain About World Cup Event at Oslo Fortress; Defense Chief's Spouse Relocates Due to Noise

The Norwegian Armed Forces lodged formal complaints regarding disturbances during the 'Fotballfesten' event held at Akershus Fortress in Oslo amidst the World Cup. The issues raised included excessive noise, vandalism, and public intoxication, which impacted personnel and residents within the fortress grounds.

One significant consequence of the noise pollution was that the spouse of the defense chief had to temporarily move from their residence within the fortress. This highlights the extent to which the event's disruptions were felt, even by those in close proximity to the military command. The Armed Forces also reported security challenges, with individuals attempting to scale the fortress walls, leading to increased costs and property damage.

Representatives from the Armed Forces, the Oslo Environment Agency, and the event organizers met to discuss the complaints. While the event organizers stated they were within noise limits, the Armed Forces disagreed, describing the sound levels as very high. The Armed Forces emphasized the need for improved coordination and communication with event organizers for future occurrences to ensure that military operations and living conditions are not compromised.

Brage Steinson Wiik-Hansen, a spokesperson for the Armed Forces, downplayed any dramatic conflict, characterizing the situation as a need for better coordination. He stressed that the primary goal is to establish robust planning and communication protocols before and during future events. The Oslo municipality, which leased the area to the event organizers, was also urged by the Armed Forces to enhance coordination with neighbors and involve military entities in the planning process.
