Armed Group's Incursion in Kabambare Causes Deaths and Displacement

The security situation in Kabambare territory, Maniema province, remains dire following repeated armed incursions since July 2 by a group led by the self-proclaimed General Mayaya. Fighters originating from Nyunzu in Tanganyika province have entered Maniema, triggering deadly clashes with both the army and rival armed groups.

These confrontations have instilled widespread panic among the civilian population. Numerous homes and properties have been looted or destroyed, forcing many residents to abandon their villages in search of safer areas. Some families have sought refuge in the bush, while others have fled towards South Kivu, Kalemie, or central Kabambare.

National lawmaker Emedi Amuri Xavier Todos has brought the deteriorating situation to the attention of the National Assembly, seeking a formal response to the security crisis. He has called upon relevant government ministers, including those of Interior, Defense, and Humanitarian Affairs, to intervene swiftly and halt the violence.

He condemned the human and material toll of the clashes, reporting that Mayaya's men have engaged in looting, destruction, and arson in affected areas. Residents have been forced to flee the "crackling of bullets."

The lawmaker noted the growing scale of population displacement, with some residents seeking refuge in neighboring South Kivu province, others heading to Kalemie, and some returning to Kabambare-Center while awaiting improved security. Local populations are appealing for a stronger security presence and humanitarian assistance for the displaced, alongside a prompt intervention from national authorities to end the violence.
