About Radio Okapi
Radio Okapi is a joint project of the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO, formerly MONUC) and the Swiss NGO Fondation Hirondelle. It was established in 2002 with the purpose of supporting the peace process in the DRC.
Radio Okapi is widely considered a significant and generally reliable source of information in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with The Economist in 2011 calling it 'one of Africa's most admirably independent radio services'. Its mission is to promote peace and democracy through accurate and balanced reporting. However, a recent study indicated that Radio Okapi tends to engage in traditional conflict news reporting, relying heavily on state and military sources, and may present violent events without sufficient historical or political context. It has also been criticized by the M23 rebel group for alleged bias and 'anti-M23 propaganda'. The media environment in the DRC is challenging, with journalists facing threats from government, armed groups, and security forces, and a new press law allowing criminal penalties for journalists.
