About Radio Okapi
Radio Okapi was established in 2002 by the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC, now MONUSCO) and the Swiss NGO Fondation Hirondelle. Fondation Hirondelle co-managed the station and provided support until 2014, after which it continued under the MONUSCO mandate, making it the United Nations radio in the DRC.
Radio Okapi is widely considered a significant and generally reliable source of information in the DRC, often praised for its independence and role in promoting peace and democracy. However, some analyses indicate that its conflict reporting tends to rely heavily on state and military sources, potentially limiting diverse perspectives and sometimes reinforcing ethnic biases. There have been criticisms regarding its objectivity in specific conflict reporting, with accusations of using unverified anonymous sources and spreading propaganda. The outlet has also faced challenges to its independence, including a past suspension for interviewing a rebel leader. The broader media environment in the DRC is characterized as 'not-free,' with journalists facing threats, arrests, and censorship from both state authorities and armed groups.
Reading context
Media systems vary by law, ownership, and editorial custom. We preserve each outlet's framing and add context so readers can compare coverage without treating one country as the default.
