Armed Man Surrenders After Dortmund Standoff with Children

An armed man, reportedly of Serbian origin, surrendered to police in Dortmund on Wednesday morning after a tense standoff. The 51-year-old had shot at a police officer and then barricaded himself in his apartment with his three children for several hours.

The incident began Tuesday evening when the man's wife called emergency services for help. Upon arrival at the residential building in the Hahsten district, the man fired a handgun at an officer, who sustained minor injuries protected by his bulletproof vest. The man then retreated into his apartment, where his children were present.

Special forces were deployed, and negotiations continued for hours. Around 3:30 a.m., the perpetrator voluntarily emerged from the building and was arrested without resistance by officers from the special operations unit. Police confirmed that the three children are safe and are receiving care.

Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack. Reports suggest the incident may have escalated from an earlier disturbance at a restaurant, where the man allegedly threatened patrons and used pepper spray before fleeing in a car. When police attempted to stop him, he reportedly fired through his car window, hitting the officer.
