Artist's Granddaughter Demands Lasting Security for Dispossessed Victims

Adriana González Camarena, granddaughter of the renowned painter Jorge González Camarena, is demanding robust security measures following the restitution of her family's home. She expressed that victims of property dispossession require more than a temporary return of their assets; they need lasting assurance that those who illegally occupied the property will not return.

In an open letter, González Camarena emphasized that the restitution process must clearly establish legitimate possession and include a protection scheme against future attempts at dispossession. She argued that recovering a property is not merely about handing over keys; it involves restoring victims' peace of mind, security, and trust, which are often lost during such ordeals.

González Camarena highlighted the state's responsibility towards victims. She asserted that authorities should not wait for aggression to occur after a dispossession is reported and recognized as a risk. Instead, institutions must proactively prevent recurrence, thoroughly investigate all individuals involved, including organizers and financiers, and ensure the victim can legitimately reclaim and retain their heritage.

When a victim of dispossession loses more than a property: they lose peace of mind, security, and in many cases, trust.

She specified the roles of various agencies: the Mexico City Attorney General's Office should investigate the crime and identify all perpetrators, while the Investigative Police must conduct investigations under the prosecutor's guidance. The Secretariat of Citizen Security is tasked with providing protection against risks and threats, and local authorities must act within their administrative and security competencies. The judiciary's role is to ensure judicial oversight and that decisions respect victims' rights.

It is not enough to physically recover the property; authorities must guarantee the security of the victims, prohibit the approach of the involved persons, prevent new illegal entries into the property, as well as an effective police response to any attempt at repetition.
