Artist Narcisa Barbu is breathing new life into fashion by transforming ordinary clothing items into wearable art. Her unique approach involves painting directly onto garments, imbuing each piece with distinct personality and style. This creative endeavor extends beyond her personal work; Barbu also dedicates herself to nurturing young talent, coordinating a painting workshop where she guides children and teenagers in developing their artistic skills. She aims to instill in them the understanding that a passion, even one seemingly forgotten, can profoundly impact one's life and open new avenues.

From two weeks to two weeks, we come up with something. If the children from the workshop don't come, I try to capture your attention with something. This activity (...) at one point helped me solve many problems. In life, that's how it is, you have to find solutions to meet all obligations.

โ€” Narcisa BarbuThe artist explains how her creative work provides solutions to life's challenges and obligations.

Barbu's latest exhibition, "Gallery on a Hanger," recently unveiled 42 of her painted garments and accompanying accessories at the "Ion Minulescu" County Library in Slatina. This event marked a significant moment, showcasing her artistic evolution and her ability to translate her passion into tangible, fashionable creations. The exhibition celebrated her return to a childhood fascination with customizing clothes, a skill she honed after a career shift.

If I painted and many people know and I've made them painted clothing items over time, I thought I'd do it for everyone, besides those who know me closely. I can't tell you there's a theme. It's the inspiration of the moment.

โ€” Narcisa BarbuBarbu discusses the inspiration behind her painted garments and her decision to exhibit them publicly.

Having previously worked as an engineer for 28 years, Barbu found herself seeking new solutions when her position was eliminated. This challenge led her back to her roots, rediscovering her love for art and fashion customization. For over 15 years, she has been creating painted clothing for friends and clients, many of whom return for her unique designs. The exhibition was her first public display of these creations, offering a wider audience a glimpse into her artistic vision and the charm of one-of-a-kind apparel.

I tried to offer for all sizes. I initially thought of doing the same design in different sizes, but it would have been too monotonous. And I said โ€“ it's nothing, we'll do all sorts, and if someone really wants the design from a large t-shirt on a small one, we'll remake it. It won't turn out the same, no matter how hard I try, neither paintings nor t-shirts. They are unique and that's the charm, that no one can be like us when we dress in our t-shirts.
