Arunachal Pradesh's Glaw Lake becomes India's 101st Ramsar site

Arunachal Pradesh's Glaw Lake has achieved international recognition as India's 101st Ramsar site, a designation for wetlands of global importance. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced the designation, calling it a significant milestone for biodiversity, water and climate security, and sustainable livelihoods. This is the first Ramsar site for Arunachal Pradesh, located within the Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary. The freshwater lake in the Eastern Himalayas is a biodiversity hotspot, surrounded by lush vegetation with over 150 tree species and 49 orchid species recorded. Yadav highlighted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, the number of Ramsar sites in India has surged from 26 in 2014 to 101. "Every new Ramsar site strengthens our resolve to protect nature while securing the future of communities that depend on these invaluable ecosystems," he stated. The designation follows proposals submitted to the Ramsar Secretariat, fulfilling criteria set by the convention, an environmental treaty established in 1971.
