As Demolition of Properties Tears Nwobodo, Wife, Kinsman Apart, Polarises Enugu Community

An uneasy calm has settled over Nkanuland in Enugu State, Nigeria, following the demolition of properties owned by businessman Dr. Basil Ogbuanu. The incident has sharply divided prominent indigenes and centers on a land dispute involving Ogbuanu and Mrs. Patricia Nwobodo, wife of former Anambra State Governor Chief Jim Nwobodo. Ogbuanu alleges that he legally acquired plots of land within an estate at Independent Layout, Enugu, from Linkana Hotels Limited, a company listing Senator Jim Nwobodo and his wife as directors. He claims to have made full payments in October and November 2022, with the Nwobodos acknowledging the transactions and signing necessary documents.

Ogbuanu further stated that while his duplexes were under construction, Mrs. Nwobodo allegedly "invaded" the site on January 16 and 17, 2026, carrying out "illegal, malicious destruction" of his nearly completed buildings. However, in a separate legal filing in March 2026, Mrs. Nwobodo claimed Ogbuanu "deceitfully paid money" for a plot within her estate and that she was ready to refund the payment, which Ogbuanu refused. When approached for comment, Mrs. Nwobodo, identifying herself as a senior lawyer, declined to discuss the ongoing court cases, calling them sub judice. She did, however, issue a statement to correct what she called a "mischievous and misleading falsehood," asserting that her husband and she had no involvement in the demolition.

Despite Mrs. Nwobodo's denial, Ogbuanu maintains he possesses all necessary land sale documents and building approvals from the Enugu State Government. He has refused any refund offers and has initiated legal action against the Nwobodos and their associated firms, Linkana Hotels Limited, Millennium Construction & Estate Developers Limited, and Moss Island Limited, seeking 5.8 billion Nigerian Naira (approximately $3.7 million USD) in compensation for the demolished structures. The legal battle highlights a significant conflict over property rights and alleged fraudulent dealings within the community.
