The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video that appears to show police officers assaulting a gold seller in the Festac area. The incident gained widespread attention after the victim shared videos detailing his alleged encounter.

The Lagos State Police Command has seen the video and has commenced an investigation into the incident.

According to the victim's account, he was stopped and searched by officers who, finding no illicit items, questioned the digital scale he used for weighing gold. He claims the officers accused him of using the scale for weighing cannabis and attempted to force him into an unmarked vehicle. The victim alleged that the officers, who were not in proper uniform, physically assaulted him, hitting him on the head with a gun.

The viral footage captured a confrontation near a minibus, with subsequent videos showing the victim with an injury near his eye. He also alleged that one officer instructed others to open fire before they fled the scene.

The officers involved have been identified as personnel attached to Area E Command.

The Commissioner of Police has directed the Area Commander to bring the officers to the Command Headquarters for immediate investigation and appropriate action. The victim has been urged to contact the Command’s Complaint Response Unit to assist with the ongoing inquiry.
