As Europe Heats Up, China's Air Conditioner Makers Profit

As Europe swelters under unprecedented heatwaves, Chinese air conditioner manufacturers are ramping up production to meet a dramatic surge in demand. Companies like Midea are operating their factories 24/7 to produce portable air conditioning units, with finished products being urgently shipped to Europe to satisfy the growing market needs.

"We are observing rapid sales growth in some Western European countries," a Midea representative stated. The company reported that sales in markets with historically low air conditioner penetration, including France, Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom, have surged by more than 70% compared to the previous year. Other major Chinese appliance makers, such as Gree and TCL, have also increased their production.

This demand spike is driven by record-breaking temperatures across Europe, with new June records set in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, and rising heat-related fatalities in Spain and France. The need for cooling solutions is acute. Historically, air conditioner adoption in Europe has been limited, particularly in cities with strict heritage preservation laws that restrict modifications to building facades, making traditional installations difficult and expensive.

Chinese-made cooling units are gaining popularity due to their accessible price point and practicality, often praised by consumers on social media. One anecdote describes a German resident driving 200 kilometers to purchase the last available unit of a specific model, even after its price had increased. Data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity shows China's significant dominance in the global air conditioner market, exporting $27.2 billion worth of units in 2025, representing nearly 40% of the world's total exports.
