‘As if someone had been evicted’: Zagreb residents furious over dumped waste

A pile of household rubbish beneath an underpass in Zagreb’s Gračani neighborhood left residents wondering whether someone had emptied an entire home there. Dozens of glasses, bottles, plates, pans and pots were mixed with broken glass, clothing and other waste.

The dumping occurred overnight beneath the underpass near Gračansko Borje 1, according to a resident’s post in a neighborhood Facebook group. She said it was not the first time waste had been left at the location. Passers-by also added to the mess during the day, spreading it onto a two-way street used by cars, motorcycles, children on bicycles and people riding scooters.

After reporting the waste to municipal wardens, the resident said she spent hours cleaning it herself because the response was moving too slowly. She separated glass, plastic and other materials, while worrying that someone could be injured.

Among the rubbish, she found a card bearing a person’s name and surname, along with numerous receipts and building-maintenance bills carrying the same name. She said she also reported the discovery to police.

Other residents praised her actions in the comments. One said the responsible person could have taken the waste to a recycling center in nearby Šestine, where disposal is free. Others said the person should be identified and heavily fined.
