"As Long As There's Need for Help, We Stay": Farmers Mobilize Alongside Firefighters Against Gironde Wildfires

In the Gironde region of France, farmers have mobilized alongside firefighters to battle devastating wildfires, demonstrating a powerful spirit of solidarity. At Marcheprime, about 40 kilometers southwest of Bordeaux, agricultural workers are providing crucial water supplies to the crews fighting the massive blazes that have ravaged the area for five days.

This scene mirrors the response during the 2022 wildfires in the Landes forest, where numerous farmers from across the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region voluntarily assisted the firefighters. Using their own equipment, including tractors, water tankers, and other vehicles, these farmers are playing a vital role in the ongoing struggle against the inferno, sometimes at considerable personal risk.

"This is our territory, we have members who have farms not far away, so obviously we are mobilizing. It's a great spirit of solidarity," said Théo Hernandez, president of Jeunes Agriculteurs Gironde. Hernandez, a winemaker from Camiac-et-Saint-Denis, has been on the front lines since Friday, participating in the efforts to contain the fires.

The involvement of farmers goes beyond simply providing water. Their diverse fleet of vehicles, ranging from small pickup trucks to large tankers and loaders, enables them to transport water efficiently and support the complex logistics of wildfire suppression. This collective effort underscores the deep connection between the agricultural community and the preservation of their land, especially in the face of environmental challenges like widespread fires.
