Asante Kotoko appoints Eric Tinkler as new head coach

Asante Kotoko Sporting Club has officially announced the appointment of Eric Tinkler as the new head coach, effective immediately. The club, known as the Porcupine Warriors, has secured a tactician with a significant international profile, boasting a world-class resume that includes extensive top-flight experience and a notable career as both a player and coach at the highest levels of football.

Tinkler, who holds a CAF A License, brings over 30 years of elite football experience. His coaching career includes successful stints with prominent South African clubs such as Cape Town City FC, SuperSport United, Maritzburg United, Orlando Pirates, and Bidvest Wits FC. During his tenure in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), he led Orlando Pirates to the CAF Champions League final and SuperSport United to the CAF Confederation Cup final. He also secured domestic silverware, including MTN 8 championships and a Telkom Knockout medal.

Eric brings a wealth of experience, discipline, and winning pedigree to our technical bench. His track record of developing players and delivering results at the highest level in African football makes him the right man to lead our team at this important time. As a player, Tinkler represented South Africa 48 times, captaining the national team, Bafana Bafana, at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations. He was part of the squad that won the 1996 AFCON and played in the 1998 FIFA World Cup. His playing career also spanned Europe, with spells at Barnsley FC in England, Cagliari Calcio in Italy, and Vitória de Setúbal in Portugal.

Renowned for his tactical expertise, structured approach, and player development skills, Tinkler will collaborate with Asante Kotoko's Director of Football, Stanley Menzo Purl. The club aims to build a robust structure for sustained success both domestically and continentally. Board Chairman James Osei Brown expressed confidence in Tinkler, stating, “Eric brings a wealth of experience, discipline, and winning pedigree to our technical bench.” Tinkler himself commented, “I am honoured and excited to join one of Africa’s most storied football institutions.”
