ASCE Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Infrastructure

The American Society of Civil Engineers’ Nigeria Section says engineers must design infrastructure not only for present needs, but also for challenges that have yet to arrive.

Speaking at the ASCE 2026 Conference, section president Austin Odibi said the organization would continue to champion resilient and sustainable infrastructure. Its approach includes engineering standards, research, professional education, policy advocacy and strategic partnerships.

Odibi said these efforts give engineers the knowledge and tools to address climate change, develop innovative infrastructure solutions and support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. He also highlighted the section’s focus on knowledge exchange and engineering excellence as it responds to Nigeria’s infrastructure needs.

The conference carried the theme “Climate Adaptive Cities: Engineering Solutions for Resilient Urban Futures.” It placed climate adaptation, resilient infrastructure and sustainable cities at the centre of the professional discussion. Odibi said ASCE Nigeria intended to translate global priorities into practical professional engagement within the country.
