Asian allies stress ‘critical cooperation’ as Trump slashes South Korea drills

Japan underscored the vital importance of security cooperation among Japan, the United States, and South Korea for maintaining regional stability. This assertion comes after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a significant reduction in joint military drills with Seoul, a move that has caused concern among allies.

Trump stated on August 16 that he had ordered the Pentagon to scale back "inappropriate and hostile" military drills with South Korea. The following day, he claimed his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was making the situation "much safer." Trump met Kim three times during his first term but has not met him since returning to the White House. He also criticized key ally Seoul for not assisting Washington in a potential conflict with Iran.

Japan's Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi stressed that "cooperation among Japan, the United States and South Korea is critical to the peace and stability of the region," particularly as Japan faces a severe and complex security environment. His Australian counterpart, Richard Marles, expressed concern over North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.

South Korean officials confirmed that the joint Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises had begun as planned, expressing hope that the personal rapport between Trump and Kim would facilitate a return to talks. Seoul's presidential office stated the drills do not indicate an intention to attack North Korea or escalate tensions. However, the Unification Ministry could not confirm the specifics of any communications between Kim and Trump, noting that while channels exist, the content of exchanges is unverified.
