Asian Tour Partners with PGA and DP World Tours, Splits from LIV Golf

The Asian Tour has officially severed ties with LIV Golf, announcing a new strategic partnership with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour that will extend through 2029. This move marks a significant shift for professional golf, leaving the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit in a precarious position.

LIV Golf had previously invested $300 million in the Asian Tour over 10 years to jointly launch the "International Series." This partnership was crucial for LIV-affiliated players, who faced bans from the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, as it provided a pathway to earn world ranking points. However, with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), the primary financial backer of LIV Golf, announcing an end to its financial support after the current year, the future of LIV's tournaments has become uncertain.

In response to LIV Golf's financial instability, the Asian Tour has moved to strengthen its existing alliances. The tour had a strategic partnership with the DP World Tour from 2016 to 2021, co-hosting events. "When the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and Asian Tour unite, the foundation of professional golf in Asia will expand," said Jo Min-tant, CEO of the Asian Tour, highlighting the potential benefits of this new collaboration.

Adding to LIV Golf's challenges, the circuit is reportedly facing a lawsuit from Canadian technology firm Mobe Systems Group. The company is seeking $1 million in unpaid fees and damages for breach of contract, alleging that LIV Golf failed to pay for broadcast technology services and unilaterally terminated their contract in May. LIV Golf still has four tournaments scheduled for the remainder of the year, including an event in the UK.
