Assam flood toll rises to 62, PM Modi takes stock; over 7 lakh affected in state

The flood situation in Assam remains critical, with the death toll climbing to 62 and affecting over 705,000 people across nine districts. While water levels have begun to recede in some areas, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported 14 deaths in the preceding 24 hours alone.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received an update on the ongoing relief and rescue operations from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Sarma informed the Prime Minister about the extent of the devastation and the challenges faced on the ground. Prime Minister Modi expressed his condolences for the loss of life and property, assuring that the calamity is being given the highest priority and that the Indian government will provide full support for relief, rehabilitation, and rebuilding efforts.

He sought an update on the extent of the devastation, the ongoing relief operations and the challenges we are confronting on the ground. I briefed him on the measures being undertaken by the State Government and our efforts to reach out to every affected family.

The Indian Army and the Indian Air Force are actively involved in assisting the state government with rescue operations. Reports indicate significant fatalities in districts like Charaideo and Sivasagar, with Sivasagar alone accounting for 27 deaths. ASDMA also reported one person missing.

Meanwhile, other parts of India are also grappling with severe weather. In Sikkim's Namchi district, a landslide tragically killed two workers and injured four others while they were clearing debris from a previous landslip. In Gujarat, 35 rain-related deaths have been reported in the past two days, with Valsad and Navsari being the worst-hit districts, leading to the rescue of over 7,000 people.

Expressing his deep condolences over the loss of lives and property, the Hon’ble Prime Minister assured the people of Assam that this calamity is being accorded the highest priority and the Government of India will extend every possible support to aid our relief, rehabilitation and rebuilding efforts.
